Same text used in the prerequisite course, RADS 4723, Principles of Computed Tomography.
Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the imaging parameters for a computed tomographic examination
  • Explain the rational for particular imaging parameters
  • Describe the result of changes in the imaging parameters
Course Expectations

You MUST complete all course requirements during the semester of initial enrollment. However, if you do not complete the course during the first semester, you may request, in writing, an "I" (incomplete) grade. Incompletes will only be granted for extenuating circumstances -- poor time management or a hectic work schedule are NOT extenuating circumstances. If the Incomplete is granted, you will then have 30 days from the first class day of the following semester. You must complete all course requirements by the end of the incomplete period. A grade of "F" will be assigned to students who fail to complete all course requirements by the incomplete period. A second extension to complete course requirements cannot be granted for any reason.  

Unit Exams (30%)

This course is divided into individual study units. A list of learning objectives is found at the beginning of each study unit. You should read each objective so that you'll know what you're expected to learn from that particular unit of instruction. The Unit Exams for this course are based on those learning objectives.

A Unit Exam accompanies each unit of instruction. Multiple choice, matching, and short answer (fill in the blank) formats are used in the Unit Exams.  Although each Unit Exam may be an "open book" evaluation of the text, you should first try to answer all questions without referring to the instructional materials. The Unit Exams will be graded when they are submitted, except for written responses.

Recommended due dates will be published in the course calendar. Exams may be submitted at any time without penalty as long as the are submitted by the end-of-semester date published on the course calendar.  NO LATE SUBMISSIONS. 

Homework (10%)

There are two (2) Homework assignments required in this course.  Each assignment is to be saved in a MSWord-compatable format and uploaded into Desire2Learn(D2L).  If assignments are not uploaded, a grade can not be entered.  Due dates will be published in the course calendar.  NO LATE SUBMISSIONS. 

Assignment 1 - Glossary Terms

Create a glossary consisting of twenty (20) terms and definitions from the course.  

Assignment 2 - Web Sites

Create a list of ten (10) web sites that contain CT scanning protocols.  

Labs (20%)

The student will be required to complete the Lab (which consist of actual CT procedures on patients) or the Alternate Lab (below):

  • Please visit ARRT's website and print a copy of the most recent clinical experience requirements ( 
  • Select any one or two procedures from each category for categories A-E. 
  • Following your facilities protocols, complete the following number of repetitions for each procedure selected & log them on your log sheets from RADS 4723: (listed by ARRT categories).
    • If you selected one procedure from a particular category, complete 5 repetitions of that procedure. 
    • If you selected two procedures from a particular category, complete 3 repetitions for each procedure.
  • This will mean that you will have 5-6 entries for each of the five categories for a total of 25-30 entries on your log sheets. 
  • After all of your procedures are logged, fax, scan & upload or e-mail your log sheets to your instructor.

If you are unable or would prefer not to complete the Lab Assignment, you can write a referenced paper dealing with one of the following subject areas:

  • Advanced CT imaging techniques focusing on the technique in general or a particular anatomic part/structure.
  • Any advanced CT procedure.
  • Current trends & advancements in CT technology.
  • Any aspect of pediatric CT.

Your referenced paper will include the following:

  • APA format
  • 3-5 pages plus title page, abstract, & reference page
  • At least 4 peer-reviewed articles but not more than 8 references total.
  • References MUST be no more than 5 years old (unless they are foundational or history-related)
  • You are permitted to use your text as a reference in addition to your 4 peer-reviewed articles

Final Examination (40%)

The final examination is an online, "closed book", proctored, comprehensive examination of multiple-choice format based upon the unit objectives.  Please schedule the time for the final with the proctor service. All students are REQUIRED to have a webcam & microphone for the Final Exam.  SEE THE PROCTOR INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETE DETAILS.  The reading assignments, unit objectives, study guides, and examinations can be utilized to review for the final. 

Students must complete the final (and all course work) by the dates published in the course calendar.  NO LATE SUBMISSIONS.

Grading Standards

All course requirements must be completed before a grade is awarded.  Unit examinations that were completed during a prior enrollment may not need to be repeated. Contact your instructor if repeating this course.  Course grades will be determined in the following manner:

Submission Format Policy

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.
Late Paper Policy

Submissions after the published due dates will be penalized 10%.  Submissions after the final cutoff date will be given a grade of zero (0).

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
