Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
• Discuss essential components of the research process.
• Differentiate application of selected research designs.
• Discuss the ethical and legal aspects of research.
• Critique selected research projects.
• Demonstrate ability to apply research findings to professional practice issues, including interdisciplinary issues.
Course Expectations

(Activities and Assignments)
This course is one that was constructed so that the material builds upon itself to result in an overall project and application of learning. In a nutshell, here is the essence of the course:
1. Choose a topic related to your field of study.
2. Develop a research question that will be used as if you are conducting research.
3. Find GOOD peer reviewed articles on your chosen topic.
4. Develop a title page and reference page.
5. Using the developed reference page, conduct a literature review to see what is out there on your subject.
6. Plan the project and write a miniature literature review.
7. Provide a reflection of the process in the Final Project through a PowerPoint presentation.
Students can proceed through the course content at their own pace within the boundaries set by the Course Schedule and the MSU Academic Calendar. See the Course Schedule at the end of this syllabus for specific information about activities and due dates.
If students have technical difficulties, they should use the “Help” link on D2L, contact the MSU Information Systems Support Staff, and send an email to the professor explaining what happened. Waiting until the last minute to ask for help or reporting incidents AFTER a due date or an exam expires may result in a grade of zero, even if it was a failure of D2L.

  • All work submitted to the instructor will be considered complete and final, and will be graded as such.
  • All reading assignments are mandatory and the students’ comprehension of the content will either be graded in the form of a quiz or applied in an assignment.
  • All assignments must be written at the baccalaureate level and will be graded for accuracy, completeness, quality, spelling, grammar, and integrity.
  • Because of the nature of the assignments, late submissions will not be accepted. It is the expectation of the faculty that you complete work on time.

Welcome (Students should start here! - Quiz)
Students should begin the course by viewing the documents found in the Welcome module. There is an overview of the course and the textbooks, as well as a document about discussion board etiquette. Finally, in this section, you will find the library use video along with a quiz about the video. This quiz is for a grade and must be completed independently by the students. It is worth 5%.

Students will find the syllabus here. This document should be reviewed by all students prior to beginning any modules. It is to be referred to throughout the semester any time the student has a question. If the answer cannot be found in the syllabus, then the instructor is to be contacted, preferably by email.
Module 1 – What is Research? (Reading/Dropbox Assignment/Discussion Board)
Students should begin by reading the course notes for an overview of the module. There are assigned reading materials found in this module that the student must complete, as well as a dropbox assignment on research ethics. This assignment is worth 5% of your grade.
There is also a discussion board question for this module.
Module 2 - APA (PowerPoints/Quiz/Discussion Board)
Students should begin by reading the course notes for an overview of the module. This module contains two PowerPoint presentations about APA. These should both be viewed by the students. After viewing the presentations, there is a quiz over proper APA formatting. This quiz is worth 5% of your grade.
There is also a discussion board question for this module.
Module 3 – Types of Research (PowerPoints/Article Critiques/Quiz/Dropbox Assignment/Discussion Boards)
Students should begin by reading the course notes for an overview of the module. This module is broken down into 5 types of research. Each type of research has PowerPoint presentations over the corresponding chapters in the book as well as an article for critique.
After reviewing all of the material in the module, the student will complete a quiz that is comprehensive over the 5 types of research. This quiz is worth 5% of your grade.
The dropbox assignment for this module is an article critique of each of the articles provided for each type of research. There is a Word document with a form for you to use to complete this assignment. This assignment is worth 10% of your grade.
There are two discussion board questions for this module.
Module 4 – Developing a Research Project (Reading/Dropbox Assignments)Students should begin by reading the course notes for an overview of the module. This module is broken down into 3 parts.
The first part has a reading assignment about how to write an effective research question. *Please note: The research question SHOULD NOT be able to be answered with a simple yes or no, so read the question out loud. Can you answer yes or no? If you can, then rewrite the question. For example, “Are technologists affected by extended working hours?” can be answered by a yes/no as the question requires just that. “What are the affects of extended working hours on technologists?” is much better as it implies there is more than one factor that could affect the radiographer and in different ways.
Following the reading assignment, students will individually create their own research question and submit it to the dropbox. The research question will be the basis of all other assignments from now on. The question will be graded and if NOT acceptable, returned to the student to revise without additional points. It is possible that in later assignments the instructor may ask that your question be further revised. This is because research sometimes drives the topic rather than the topic driving the research. The question must be approved by the instructor before the student can move forward. This assignment is worth 5%. There is also a second reading assignment about how to select scholarly articles for a literature review. There is a discussion board question for this section of the module.
The next section will inform students about how they will start a literature review. In this section, students must watch the videos on creating a title and reference page. Following the viewing of those videos, students are to create a title and reference page and submit them to the dropbox. This assignment is worth 10%.
The final section is for finishing a literature review. In this section, students must read about how to create a methods section and how to write a literature review. After completing these reading assignments, each student will write a mini literature review based on the research question written at the beginning of this module, and using the articles chosen and provided in the reference list. The mini literature review assignment is worth 20%.
Module 5 - Final Project – PowerPoint (Dropbox Assignment)
Students should begin by reading the course notes for an overview of the module. This module is for the final project and contains specific instructions for completion. Do not skip any of the instructions. This project will be in the form of a PowerPoint presentation and will be submitted to the dropbox. This project is based on the research question you will write and the mini literature review you will write. This assignment is worth 25%.

Discussion Boards
There are required discussion boards, as well as social discussion boards for this course.
In the social discussion boards, there is a Coffee Shop discussion board for chatting with your classmates. This board is not mandatory and will not be graded, but proper netiquette should be adhered to.
In the required discussion boards, there is a required Introduction discussion board, as well as five additional topic questions for discussion. Each student is required to post one meaningful response to the question, as well as two responses to other students for each topic (three for each discussion and a total of 18 for all). This is an open discussion; but you must keep in mind proper discussion board etiquette should be used. The instructor reserves the right to delete inappropriate posts and a deduction of points may be applied. Discussion boards are worth 10%. Failure to complete Discussion boards can negatively affect your grade. Each one is worth 2% of your grade.

Late Paper Policy
Assignments must be submitted by the due dates indicated at the end of the syllabus or a grade of zero may be given.
Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. This is an online course and there are no mandatory sessions. However, the student should be vigilant in
logging onto Desire2Learn on a daily basis. Regular checks will ensure that messages from the instructor are

RADS 3503 adheres to the MSU Code of Conduct. In particular, academic dishonesty, however small, creates
a breach in academic integrity. A student’s participation in this course comes with the expectation that his or
her work will be completed in full observance of the MSU Code of Student Conduct. A student should consult
the current Student Handbook for answers to any questions about the code.
Many components of RADS 3503 are designed to be highly interactive with students helping each other learn.
Students are encouraged to take full advantage of many resources available including online Desire2Learn
course resources, Internet sites, other textbooks and journals, faculty, and peers when answering objectives.

All components of RADS 3503 are designed to represent the efforts of each student INDIVIDUALLY and are
NOT to be shared or copied (plagiarized) from other sources. When students submit their efforts for grading,
they are attesting they abided by this rule.
Cheating includes, but is not limited to, (1) use of any unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or
examinations; (2) dependence upon the aid of sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing
papers, preparing reports, solving problems, or completing other assignments; or (3) the acquisition of tests or
other academic materials belonging to the university faculty or staff without permission.
Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the use of, by paraphrase or direct quotation without correct citation in

submit papers and assignments that they have previously submitted for this or other courses. The use of
materials generated by agencies engaged in "selling" term papers is also plagiarism. Students are encouraged to

assignments may be submitted to an external agency for verification of originality and authenticity.
Academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, etc.) will not be tolerated in this class. Whenever a student is unsure
of whether a particular situation will be interpreted as academic dishonesty, he/she should ask the instructor for
clarification. If students are guilty of academic dishonesty, a grade of zero (0) will be given for the quiz,
assignment, etc. Cases may also be referred to the Dean of Students for possible dismissal from the university.
By enrolling in this course, the student expressly grants MSU a “limited right” in all intellectual property
created by the student for the purpose of this course. The “limited right” shall include but shall not be

limited to the right to reproduce the student’s work product in order to verify originality and authenticity,
and for educational purposes. Specifically, faculty may submit student papers and assignments to an external
agency to verify originality and authenticity, and to detect for plagiarism.
Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016.
