Course Identification: This course is designed to give students a realistic portrayal of television production. Writing, editing, shooting, directing, creativity and overall production quality will be emphasized.

Course Management:  This course requires a lot of work outside of the designated class time.  Be Prepared. You are an adult and it is your responsibility to manage your time appropriately. 

 

Equipment:  In this course you will work with all of the equipment in the TV studio. 
This includes, but is not limited to, video cameras, microphones, tripods, audio cables, tapes, director’s switcher board, audio board, studio cameras, AVID computers and tape decks. It is imperative that you treat all the equipment with extreme care.  In short, if you break it, you buy it.

 

Grading: This course will consist of three production exercises, an AVID/videography exam, and various daily assignments. Students are expected to be on time and attend class (see attendance policy). Your peers are counting on you to be in class and to participate in the creation and production of group assignments. A peer evaluation will be distributed after each group assignment and will be a factor in determining each individual’s final grade for the project. With consideration for project participation, attendance and attitude, each individual in the group may not receive the same grade for the same project. Extensions of project deadlines will not be granted and a missed deadline will significantly lower your grade.

 

Please remember that attending every class and completing every assignment do not constitute outstanding quality or guarantee an A for the course. Attending every class and completing every assignment are only prerequisites for achieving a desired grade in the class.

Note that the number of quizzes and assignments are not set in stone.  This means it is impossible to determine how much each individual quiz or assignment will be worth. All quizzes will be given at the beginning of class, and late students will receive a zero unless the late arrival is excused.

 

Attendance: The importance of attendance cannot be expressed enough.  If you have to miss a class for any reason, please contact me in advance.  Advanced contact may not excuse your absence, but it’s better than calling after the fact and leaving your group in the lurch.  It is not acceptable to let me know about an absence through another student.  As an adult, it is your responsibility to contact me.

Work, non-emergency medical and dental appointments, fraternity/sorority events and studying for other classes are not excused absences.  I reserve the right to determine whether an absence will be excused.  This is a zero-tolerance policy.  After the third absence, the professor reserves the right to drop the student from the course.

If you need to miss class due to a religious holiday, please see me as far in advance as possible.

If you need to miss class due to university-sponsored events such as field trips and sports, please see me as far in advance as possible. You will be required to complete the assigned work on or before the due date, and you will be required to submit an official form from the university before your absence.

 

Attitude/Class Participation:  Your success in this course depends on all students attending class regularly, participating in all aspects of the group assignments and maintaining a positive attitude and work-ethic.

It is unacceptable to skip another class to work on a project for this class. Also, do not ask me for an excused absence to work on another course. If either of these occurs, it will greatly lower your participation grade. Plan accordingly and be organized.

*Part of your participation is the expectation you will attend the Senior Documentary Screenings on Friday, May 15th. All of you will be in Senior Production at some point and should know what Documentary Screenings entail. Mark this date on your calendar now.*

 

Technology:  Cell phones, MP3 players, iPads, tablets and other similar devices are not allowed. 

Sending and receiving text messages, posting to Facebook, tweeting, surfing the Internet, playing games, sending e-mails and listening to music during class will not be tolerated.  It constitutes a bad attitude and lack of respect for the course, the professor and your peers.

I reserve the right to drop any student with an F if he/she has excessive absences or missed assignments, engages in disruptive behavior, has a poor attitude, or in any other way is clearly not taking the class seriously.

 

Ethics: The MSU Student Honor Creed, written and adopted by the 2002-2003 MSU Student Senate, covers expectations related to cheating and other forms of academic dishonesty. The main statement from this document is:

“As an MSU student, I pledge not to lie, cheat, steal, or help anyone else to do so.”

All students in my courses are expected to abide by this student-produced document, as well as all other related university policies. I will provide copies of the MSU Student Honor Creed to any student who requests one. It is also in the 2014-2015 MSU Student Handbook (the handbook is also available online at http://mwsu.edu/Assets/documents/student-life/2013-14%20Student%20Handbook.pdf).

In addition, the university requires faculty to provide this statement to all students:

By enrolling in this course, the student expressly grants MSU a “limited right” in all intellectual property created by the student for the purpose of this course. The “limited right” shall include but shall not be limited to the right to reproduce the student’s work product in order to verify originality and authenticity, and educational purposes

 

Plagiarism: Plagiarism comes from the Latin word plagiarius, which means kidnapper.

Webster’s Dictionary defines plagiarize as to take (ideas, writings, etc.) from (another) and pass them off as one’s own. Plagiarism includes the deliberate as well as inadvertent failure to properly attribute.

 

Every video exercise or production you do in this class should be the work of either you or your fellow group members.  Anytime anyone outside the group shoots, edits, writes, or contributes to your creative endeavor, it will be considered plagiarism.

Violation of this policy will result in the student and/or group receiving a failing grade for this course. 

I reserve the right to recommend other sanctions as may be appropriate. Students are also encouraged to consult the following sources for additional discussion of students’ rights and responsibilities regarding cheating, attendance and general conduct:

Privacy:  Federal privacy law prohibits me from releasing information about students to certain parties outside of the university without the signed consent of the student. Thus, in almost all cases I will not discuss your academic progress or other matters with your parents. Please do not have them call me. Regardless of these important legal considerations, it is my general policy to communicate with the students, not their parents, even when a student has signed a consent form. College students are adults and are expected to behave accordingly.

 

Special Accommodations: Students with disabilities or who are in need of special arrangements should see me as early as possible in the semester. I will do what I can within reason to accommodate your needs. Please note that in order to qualify for consideration of special accommodations, you must be registered with the MSU

Office of Disability Support Services, and I must have a memo on file from that office, along with the Special Accommodations Request form.

Senior Portfolio: Please note that all mass communication majors are required to submit a senior portfolio during their Internship course and before registering for the mass communication capstone course, Senior Production. This requirement is a part of MSU’s reaccreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is non-negotiable. Students are required to demonstrate communication competence through the written word, the spoken word and visual communication; two examples of each competency are required. Students will not be admitted to Senior Production until the department chair certifies that they have satisfied the portfolio requirement.

Some Advice

1.    Attend regularly. This point cannot be stressed enough.

2.    Thoroughly understand all grading policies.

3.    Note the Absence Policy and know that it is enforced.

4.    Note the Academic Dishonesty Policy and know that it is enforced.

5.    Note the Privacy Policy and know that it is followed.

6.    If anything in this syllabus is unclear or if you have questions as the course progresses, ask!

7.    Expect to edit, re-edit, shoot b-roll, reshoot b-roll and spend a lot of time working on projects outside of the regularly scheduled class time.  Perfection is not expected, but the desire to produce the best product you can, is.  Therefore, you can expect to be asked to redo various parts of your projects.  This is time-consuming and usually unplanned, so budget your time accordingly and allow for this when creating your projects and meeting the deadlines.  Practice makes perfect, and you can’t expect to improve without a little trial and error. 

8.    Equipment failure/malfunction happens – that’s life.  However, it is not an excuse for a poorly produced project.  It is your responsibility to make sure the equipment is functioning before leaving the studio and to review your b-roll regularly while shooting to ensure all is working as it should.  Waiting until the day before your project is due to begin editing and finding your b-roll isn’t right will result in a very stressful time for you and, most often, a poor grade due to poor production quality. 

Laziness and the attitude of doing “just enough to pass” will not be tolerated in this class, nor in the real world.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Campus Carry

Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016. Areas excluded from concealed carry are appropriately marked, in accordance with state law.
