Course Objectives

The goal of second-year studies in French is to improve each student’s ability to speak, read, comprehend (at both spoken and written levels), and write in French, while the student learns more about French culture and the contrasts between French and American cultures. 

Course Expectations


The required texts for the course are Ensuite: Cours Intermédiaire de Français, 4th Edition, by Thompson and Hirsch (McGraw-Hill), 2003, and the accompanying cahier (be sure the cahier and text are both 4th edition).

FREN 1234 is a prerequisite.

 Grades for the class will be based on the following elements:

Attendance= 10%

Homework/Participation= 10%

Lab work= 10%

Quizzes= 20%

Tests= 30%

Final= 20%

Submission Format Policy

Students will complete quizzes in class on forms handed out by the instructor.  All homework will be hand-written and submitted on the following class period at the beginning of class.  Exams will be taken in class and handed in before the end of the class period.

Note: You may not submit a paper for a grade in this class that already has been (or will be) submitted for a grade in another course, unless you obtain the explicit written permission of me and the other instructor involved in advance.
Late Paper Policy


Make-up work: You are expected to turn in all work assigned if you have been absent for a valid reason. That work is due within a day of your return to class. If you know you will be absent, check with me beforehand to get assignments in advance.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. It is a theft of intellectual property and will not be tolerated, whether intentional or not.

Attendance Requirements


Because attendance is crucial in a proficiency-based class such as this, an attendance grade will be given (10% of the semester grade). After six absences, excused or otherwise, a student is dropped from the class.

Other Policies


Lab homework: The only lab exercise for each chapter is the selected scenes assigned for each chapter over the film Le fableux destin d’Amélie Poulain.  You will check the film out of the language lab in Moffett and pick up your worksheet there, then go upstairs to the media section of the library on the second floor to view the film at one of the private stations.  You have two hours to view the portion of the film assigned and complete your work, and then you must return your worksheet along with the film to the language lab assistant.  The lab is due the day (not the class) after we begin the next chapter.  There will also be an extra credit dictée (dictation) that you can do in the lab in Moffett. (It is not the dictation in the workbook.) For the dictée, you write in French the words said, and/or you answer questions in full sentences in French.  The dictée is also due the day after we begin the next chapter. You may listen to the tapes as often as you like, but you must finish the lab in one sitting. When you have finished, recopy your paragraph and answers neatly and hand them in to the lab assistant. You do the lab independently; do not consult with a classmate about any part of the lab.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016.
