Course Objectives

Course Objectives/Outcomes

The course introduces students to the discipline of art history and establishes its position within the humanities as a both a form and a body of knowledge. The specific objectives are:

  • To increase the student’s ability to communicate effectively through oral presentation and written work.
  • To support the student’s ability to work as part of groups of varying sizes
  • To support the student’s awareness of and respect for social justice and cultures outside their own.
  • To better present an argument and support their position based in logical and methodical critical thinking processes.




Student Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this course will, the learner will;

  • Have a working definition and understanding of what constitutes visual art
  • Be familiar with a variety of practitioners and examples of visual/material culture
  • Recognize various media and techniques used by artists
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the elements and principles of art and design.
  • Come face to face with major works of art and architecture. 

Apply the knowledge gained in Art Appreciation to papers and presentations.

Course Expectations

Course Output

  • Students will produce written responses from museum visits and gallery exhibitions. 
  • Students will produce a presentation, as a group, based in art analysis techniques.
  • Students will take two multiple-choice quizzes and a final exam.

·         Students are required to participate actively in class discussions and small group work.

  • Grading will be based on rubrics provided with assignments.

Grading Criteria

A                 Excellent (4.0) 90 – 100

                    The student displayed exceptional grasp of course material. Written work contained tightly argued, effectively organized, and clearly articulated information. Work demonstrated original ideas and insights. Exams demonstrated skillful critical thinking.

B                 Very Good (3.0) 80 – 89

                    The student demonstrated some critical grasp of the material. Written work contained a well-developed argument with attention to detail in research and writing. Exams demonstrated some critical thinking.

C                 Acceptable (2.0) 70 – 79

              The student demonstrated limited knowledge of the material. Written work contained little attention to detail and no strength of argument. Exams demonstrated limited critical thinking.

D                 Poor (1.0) 60 – 69

               The student demonstrated inadequate knowledge of course material. Written work contained poor organization, ineffectual argument, and little attention to detail. Exams demonstrated inadequate knowledge of course material.

F                  Failing (0.0) 50 – 59

                    The student demonstrated the total absence of any grasp of course material. Written work lacked coherent argument and organization. Exams demonstrated no grasp of course material of course material.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. Attendance Requirements

Attendance, Absence, and Lateness

  • If you arrive TEN minutes after class is scheduled to start, you will not be allowed to attend that session and will be counted absent.
  • Students may be absent from class THREE times without penalty.
  • The professor does not require nor desire documentation or explanation for absences.
  • If students incur a FOURTH ABSENCE, their grade will be REDUCED A FULL LETTER GRADE.
  • BUT if students are absent or late FIVE times, whatever the reason, they will receive A FAILING GRADE FOR THE COURSE.
Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016.
