The typical sequence of instruction is as follows: 1) Summary of concepts and practice in writing and analysis, 2) quiz and additional practice 3) exam assessment

Exams

Exams will be given over significant topics and graded on a 100 point scale. At least a week notice will be given prior to exams if deviating from the syllabus. Missing an exam is highly discouraged. Make up exams are given at the convenience of the instructor. All exams will be taken in pencil.

Final Exam

The final exam will not be weighted any heavier than other exams, but will however be cumulative, due to the nature of the course content. The final exam will be given during the final exam period. (No exceptions). Extra time beyond the scheduled exam time will not be given due to tardiness for the exam. The final exam may not be made up. (No exceptions.) Travel or flight plans, work, concerts, lessons etc., are not valid excuses.

Quizzes may not be made up. Homework/classwork may be turned in without penalty on the date due, by 5 PM.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the use of someone else's thoughts, words, ideas, or lines of argument in your own work without appropriate documentation (a parenthetical citation at the end and a listing in "Works Cited")-whether you use that material in a quote, paraphrase, or summary. “Students are expected to attend all meetings of the classes for which they are enrolled.” (Student Handbook, p. 39)  Excused absences are recognized for illness and university sponsored official events.

 

There is no specific university policy regarding attendance; instructors are allowed to determine their own attendance policies. For purposes of this class anyone missing 10% of the total number of classes (5) may be denied the opportunity for making up

a missed exam.

 

Roll is kept on a daily basis. The instructor must give the student a verbal or written warning prior to being dropped from the class. Instructor’s records will stand as evidence of absences. A student with excessive absences may be dropped from a course by the instructor.

Course Description

MUSC 2613, Music Theory IV is a continuation of Music Theory III, and constitutes a study of the fundamentals of pitch, rhythm, melody, harmony and form in the context of the expanded tonal music of the late 19th centuries, and rhythmic, harmonic and melodic elements of the 20th century including practice in writing this style, and analysis of selected pieces.

 

Course Objectives:

Textbook & Instructional Materials

Kostka, Stefan and Dorothy Payne. Tonal Harmony: With an Introduction to Twentieth Century Music, 7th Edition. (McGraw Hill).

 

Manuscript paper, soft lead pencils, ruler or straight edge, and other music manuscript preparation materials. (All work will be done in pencil. Specific assignments may be accomplished on Finale® or MUSCORE.)

Computer Requirements

It is your responsibility to have (or have access to) a working computer for this class. Information pertaining to the conduct of the course is sent to the e-mail address specified in the detail class list provided to the instructor. Personal computer technical difficulties will not be considered a reason for failure to have the study guide or listening example links.  Computers are available on campus in various areas of the buildings as well as the Academic Success Center.

 

Instructor Class Policies

Disruptive behavior, as determined by the instructor, may be subject for removal from class.

 

Disruptive activities include but are not limited to;

Conversing with another person in such a way that it is distracting to the class or to the instructor or creates an interruption in the class sequence

 

Speaking disrespectfully to another person in class

 

Use of an electronic device in such a way as to be considered by the instructor to be disruptive. Electronic devices are not permitted during examination periods.

 

Repeatedly leaving the room

 

Creating a circumstance or situation that disrupts the classroom decorum or other behavior of a nature considered to be a distraction

 

Making a video or audio recording of the instructor without permission is prohibited, as is the posting a video of classroom activity to a social media site without the written permission of the instructor.

Change of Schedule

A student dropping a course (but not withdrawing from the University) within the first 12 class days of a regular semester or the first four class days of a summer semester is eligible for a100% refund of applicable tuition and fees. Dates are published in the Schedule of Classes each semester.

 

Refund and Repayment Policy

A student who withdraws or is administratively withdrawn from Midwestern State University (MSU) may be eligible to receive a refund for all or a portion of the tuition, fees and room/board charges that were paid to MSU for the semester. HOWEVER, if the student received financial aid (federal/state/institutional grants, loans and/or scholarships), all or a portion of the refund may be returned to the financial aid programs. As described below, two formulas (federal and state) exists in determining the amount of the refund. (Examples of each refund calculation will be made available upon request).

Smoking/Tobacco Policy

College policy strictly prohibits the use of tobacco products in any building owned or operated by WATC.  Adult students may smoke only in the outside designated-smoking areas at each location.

To comply with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989 and subsequent amendments, students and employees of Midwestern State are informed that strictly enforced policies are in place which prohibits the unlawful possession, use or distribution of any illicit drugs, including alcohol, on university property or as part of any university-sponsored activity. Students and employees are also subject to all applicable legal sanctions under local, state and federal law for any offenses involving illicit drugs on University property or at University-sponsored activities.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course. Campus Carry

Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016. Areas excluded from concealed carry are appropriately marked, in accordance with state law.
