Course Description:

The course is intended to increase the variety and depth of an individual’s understanding and appreciation of the art music of western civilization, and to enhance an understanding and enjoyment of music as an art in general.

Course Objectives:

  1. To become familiar with some basic terminology of classical art music
  2. To gain a basic knowledge of musical structure and form of art music
  3. To be able to identify selected works and historical periods based on general characteristics
  4. To investigate the unique characteristics and differences of each style period and of major composers of that period
  5. To be able to recognize general musical characteristics of an unfamiliar work and to be able to identify the style period in which it was written

Grading:

  • There will be five (5) exams, corresponding to the division of parts in the text, with the exception of the first exam which will include Parts 1 and 2. Exams are not cumulative.
  • Each will be a 100 point exam of 75 multiple choice questions of 1 point each and 10 listening examples worth five (5) points each. Exam questions will be taken directly from the text and the instructor’s presentation notes. (50% of each exam will be listening.)
  • Each exam will be preceded by a listening quiz, which is both an assessment tool and a preparation for the exam.
  • There will be 3  joint assignments with the paired class:

 

Final Exam: Wednesday Dec 13, 2017, 3:30-5:30 PM

The final exam will include material from Part VI only. There are no make ups for the final exam.

 

The university grading scale will be used:

90-100=A

80-89=B

70-79=C

60-69=D

 

Academic Dishonesty:  Plagiarism is the use of source material of other persons, either published or unpublished, including the Internet, without following the procedures of attributing credit, or the submission for credit of work not of the individuals to whom credit is given.  For anyone proven to be plagiarizing, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. In addition, using or permitting others to use unauthorized materials during exams; copying, providing, receiving or using exam answers from others, viewing, using or allowing others to use electronic devices during exams for the purpose of cheating will result in appropriate disciplinary action. (For all exams, cell phones will be secured in book bags, pockets, etc., and not accessible on the desktop).

 

General Class Policies/Procedures:

  • Sign in daily at the door. (If you plan to sign and leave, don’t bother to sign in.)
  • Check the podium at the door for new material, notes, etc.
  • Exam Scores will be returned at the door as soon as available. (Not always the next class period.)
  • Class begins at 12:00, not 12:10.
  • Bottled water/drinks are permitted in class. Please remove your cans, plastic disposable bottles as you leave. Disregarding this request will result in prohibition of beverages from class. Please do not bring food to class in the form of sandwiches, fast food, etc. If you bring small snacks, please dispose of wrappers, etc., as you do disposable bottles. Disruptive behavior, as determined by the instructor, may be subject for removal from class. Disruptive activities include but are not limited to;
    • Conversing with another person in such a way that it is distracting to the class or to the instructor or creates an interruption in the class sequence
    • speaking disrespectfully to the instructor or to another person
    • use of an electronic device in such a way as to be considered by the instructor to be disruptive
    • repeatedly leaving the room
    • consumption of food of beverages in such a way as to be considered disruptive by the instructor
    • creating a circumstance or situation that disrupts the classroom decorum
    • other behavior of a nature considered to be a distraction

Attendance:

“Students are expected to attend all meetings of the classes for which they are enrolled.” (Student Handbook, p. 39)  Excused absences are recognized for illness and university business. There is no specific university policy regarding attendance; instructors are allowed to determine their own. For purposes of this class anyone missing 10% of the total number of classes may be denied the opportunity for a making up a missed exam, or for grade determination in borderline cases.

Privacy Statement

Federal Privacy laws prohibit faculty from releasing information about a student’s academic progress to other students or to those outside the university.  In this class, no information regarding your grades, exams, or confidential matters can be released to friends or relatives.  Without a note from you, no one may pick up your exam and exam grades cannot be posted.

Special Needs Statement

If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information that needs sharing, or if you need special accommodations in the event that the building must be evacuated, please register with the Disability Support Services and make an appointment with the professor as soon as possible.

Conduct Statement

Behavior that interferes with either the instructor’s ability to conduct the class or the ability of other students to benefit from the instruction will result in the instructor’s removal of the disruptive student(s) from the class, either temporarily or permanently (instructor drop) and receiving a lower final grade up to and including an F. Depending on the nature of the behavior, the individual may be subject to further disciplinary action as per MSU policy.

Concealed Handgun Statement

Senate Bill 11 passed by the 84th Texas Legislature allows licensed handgun holders to carry concealed handguns on campus, effective August 1, 2016. Areas excluded from concealed carry are appropriately marked, in accordance with state law. For more information regarding campus carry, please refer to the University’s webpage at https://mwsu.edu/campus-carry/rules-policies.

Writing Proficiency Requirement

All students seeking a Bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University must satisfy a writing proficiency requirement once they've 1) passed the 6 hours of Communication Core and and 2) earned 60 hours. You may meet this requirement by passing either the Writing Proficiency Exam or English 2113. Please keep in mind that, once you've earned over 90 hours, you lose the opportunity to take the $25 exam and have no option but to enroll in the three-credit hour course.
