Provost / Vice President, Academic Affairs
The Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer of the University and its second-ranking official. The Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs is directly responsible to the President for the administration, budgeting and staffing of all academic programs, including Outreach and Engagement. The Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs supervises and coordinates the operation of six academic colleges, graduate school, Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Education and Assessment, university library, Academic Success Center, International Education, the Honors Program, Registrar, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Liaison and Reporting. The Provost / Vice President for Academic Affairs is responsible for the curriculum; revision and development of new courses of study, including distance learning; the encouragement of research; the development of class schedules; the maintenance of adequate library services; and the recruitment and evaluation of instructional personnel.
Recommends academic policies and procedures to the President. Presides over meetings of the Academic Council. Works with the deans and department heads in preparing an annual budget recommendation for the President. Prepares recommendation on instructional appointments, reappointments and dismissals. Serves on the Administrative Council. Receives and considers recommendations from the Academic Appeals Committee, the Core Curriculum Committee, the Faculty Research Committee, the Honors Program Committee, the Library Committee, the Pre-Medical and Pre-Law committees, the Rank and Tenure Committee, and the University Master Plan Committee. Frequently represents the University before the Texas Coordinating Board of Colleges and Universities and other state agencies.
Requires an exemplary record of leadership and shared governance. Must have extensive substantial experience in academic administration with heavy emphasis on budgeting, staffing, curriculum development, strategic planning, accreditation, research, and grievance resolution.
Must possess a strong general working knowledge of state legislative and education-agency processes. Requires knowledge of budgeting, funding, assessment, and strategic planning. Should have a strong knowledge of information technology as it relates to research and classroom instruction. Must be knowledgeable in standard office practices and procedures and in the use of personal computers and commonly used office software programs.
Terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution in an academic discipline offered at Midwestern State University and have an academic record that warrants appointment to full professor. A strong tie to the liberal arts is preferred.
Must have proven leadership and managerial skills and be able to communicate effectively with a variety of constituencies. Must possess an open, collegial, collaborative management style with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
