Assistant Director, Residence Life and Housing
Responsible for the coordination and management of a welcoming, engaging,
supportive, and dynamic residential living learning environment in the University residence hall setting. Duties include providing primary leadership for one University residence hall with a full staff of Resident Assistants (RAs) and possible supervision of Residence Hall Directors, Graduate Hall Directors and Graduate Assistants. Assists in the development and implementation of living-learning communities, student academic success and support efforts, and the social, intellectual, cultural, and recreational programming for students residing within the University residence hall setting. Provides direction to the Faculty-In-Residence. Develops and maintains an environment conducive to the personal growth and academic success of the resident students in a manner consistent with the mission and values of Midwestern State University and Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management. Responsible for ongoing student development activities and behavior management, building management and operations, staff training and supervision, summer camps, and housing administrative functions. The position is a 12-month, full-time position. The position includes an optional furnished apartment available at reduced rent. Reports to the Director of Residence Life and Housing.
Coordinate the activities of up to four residence halls, including possible supervision of Residence Hall Directors (RHDs) and/or Graduate Hall Directors (GHDs). Provide hall director responsibilities within one residence hall environment, including the supervision student paraprofessional staff (RAs). Design, implement, and evaluate programming efforts in collaboration with administrative departments and academic units across the institution to benefit and develop resident students. Partner with faculty master participating in the faculty in-residence program to coordinate academic support and outreach efforts for students, including services through the residential community learning center. Counsels resident students on personal and academic issues and adjudicates offenses of the MSU Student Code of Conduct and Housing Handbook. Participates in the selection, training, and supervision of Resident Assistants (RAs) and Assistant Hall Directors (AHDs). Performs on-call duty as scheduled for the residential housing community.
Successful applicants will possess a minimum of three years' experience in residence life. Experience in student programming, advising, and conduct required. Experience with residential living-learning environments and first-year experience efforts preferred.
Must have working knowledge of student development, basic student counseling, conflict resolution and mediation, student leadership development, organizational advising, staff supervision, and student conduct adjudication. Must have demonstrated ability to exercise quality judgment, critical and independent thinking. Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills in both oral speaking and writing. Organizational, crisis response, and skills are necessary. Must possess the ability to coordinate complex, cross-related tasks in a fast-paced environment and supportively supervise and challenge student and professional staff. A commitment to the values of diversity and multiculturalism is required.
Master's degree required in higher education, college student personnel, counseling, or related field. A candidate holding a Bachelor's degree will be considered if coupled with additional related experience.
Must be available to work evenings and weekends. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
