Director, Residence Life and Housing
The Director is responsible for the University's residence life and dining programs serving 1,400 students in three residence halls and three apartment communities. Departmental supervision includes multiple full-time staff members and budgets in excess of $7 million. Responsibilities of the position include: providing leadership to a residence life program which promotes student learning and engagement and allows students to learn in a safe, comfortable, supportive, and enriching living environment; partnering with Facilities Services to upgrade and maintain residence life facilities; and practicing sound and deliberate fiscal management to allow flexibility and innovation within residence life programs. The Director reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students.
Coordinate and supervise the selection, training, and evaluation of professional, administrative, support, and student staff. Promote the residence life program within the University community through collaborative partnerships with academic colleagues and administrative departments. Administer the residence life judicial program. Counsel and advise students and student groups or organizations. Resolve personal concerns, developmental issues, conflicts, and crises affecting resident students. Coordinate housing for summer camps and conferences. Integrate dining services and housing programs to provide exemplary services and experiences for students. Develop and manage departmental budgets, including revenue projections and expenditures, for self-supporting residential living and dining services auxiliary operations. Monitor new housing construction and renovation projects with Facilities Services, which includes working closely with architects, contractors, and designers. Research and develop bid and contract specifications for goods and services as needed to support residence life and dining operations. Formulate and assess immediate and long-range plans for residence life, community programming, policy development, and facility improvements. Implement attractive marketing campaigns for residential living and oversee the publication and distribution of promotional materials using printed and online media. Utilize available data analytics and retention platforms to lead residence life staff in identifying and assisting students in need of support. Investigate Title IX complaints involving students as a member of a trained investigatory team. Prepare annual department assessment plans with focus on student learning outcomes and functional objectives. Serve on University committees. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Five years professional experience in mid-upper level management of residence life operations on a college campus; a record of innovative leadership in managing people, programs, services, and budgets; and demonstrated success in developing college students and enhancing student learning through residential living. Previous experience administering student judicial programs and a record of managing residence life operations in an efficient and effective manner is required.
Must have knowledge of student development theory and of the impact of a residential living-learning environment on student learning, as well as a thorough understanding of the legal and regulatory parameters of contemporary residence life and university housing practices. Knowledge of generally accepted office practices and procedures to include management, recordkeeping, and budgeting is required. Skill in decision making and proficiency in both oral and written interpersonal communication are required. Must possess the ability to work in a team environment while maintaining positive professional relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, and the local community.
Master's degree in college student personnel, counseling, or related field required; earned doctorate preferred.
Must have the sensitivity and skill to work with a diverse and multicultural student and employee population. Must possess excellent time management and organizational skills and the ability to work under pressure with uneven time constraints. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends. Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
