Director, Facilities Services
Serves as a key administrator of Facilities Services, directly responsible for management, supervision, and coordination of physical plant operations and of small capital construction projects on campus. Plans, coordinates, and supervises the activities of all craftsmen performing building maintenance such as carpentry, painting, lock repairs, grounds keeping, custodial, vehicle fleet, and preventative maintenance services. Evaluates shop workloads, assigns work and priorities, designates lead shop responsibilities, and coordinates required assistance from shops not under their supervision. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Facilities Services, the position includes functional responsibility for small facility construction projects and contract services. Makes decisions regarding outsourcing services based on workloads and budget constraints to ensure timely completion of work and to reduce backlogs. Responsible for procurement and project management of maintenance outsourcing and assigned special projects.
Primarily responsible for the maintenance and operations of Facilities Services including the direct and indirect supervision of technical, clerical, administrative, and trades personnel. Additional duties include project management of capital construction projects (<~$100k), including estimating, budgeting, scheduling, coordination with university personnel, contract administration, and quality control of the construction process. Manages all operations including electrical, utilities, and construction projects in the absence of the Associate Vice President for Facilities Services and assists in developing strategies for improving customer service. Sets the direction for greater efficiency and effectiveness of physical plant operations; provides budgeting and planning guidance; oversees job/worker order operations to ensure accurate cost estimates; develops preventive maintenance programs. Directs and supervises the selection, acquisition, use and maintenance of vehicle fleet, including buses, vans and sedans for use by university faculty and staff. Evaluates performance of staff and actively participates in hiring decisions and dismissals.
Physical Condition:
Moderate physical activity required with occasional lifting of objects weighing more than fifty pounds. Must be able to crawl, stoop, and stand for extended periods of time.
Eight or more years experience including management and supervision of building maintenance personnel (grounds, custodial, fleet, carpentry, painting, lock shop), building construction oversight and estimating, and office operations. Experience working in a university environment is preferred.
Must be skilled in the use of personal computers with working knowledge of Microsoft applications: Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. Working knowledge of AutoCAD highly desired. Must be an effective organizer and performance evaluator. Knowledge in all aspects of building systems, operation, materials, methods, and technology.
Bachelor's degree required in one of the recognized engineering disciplines or equivalent relevant experience. Master's degree and Professional registration preferred.
