Central Plant Operator I
Performs semiskilled work in the operation and maintenance of high pressure steam boilers, refrigeration chillers, and auxiliary equipment in the production and distribution of heating and cooling for the campus. Reports directly to the Central Plant Superintendent.
Fires and continually monitors boilers. Starts, stops, and operates all other boiler/chiller plant equipment. Understands and reads gauges, and records gauge and meter readings. Performs chemical tests on chilled water, boiler water, tower water, and pool water and responds appropriately regarding chemical treatment. Answers telephone and responds appropriately; operates computer to create jobsheets and make HVAC adjustments as necessary; answers Police radio and telephone and responds to fire and security alarms, and makes appropriate telephone calls related to these. Operator 1 also dismantles, reassembles, repairs, cleans, paints, and performs other maintenance duties on pumps, motors, fans, and other auxiliary equipment; cleans and paints boilers, chillers, towers, and the plant itself; and under immediate supervision assist in the maintenance of boilers and chillers and other major plant equipment. Operator 1 may be required to check and maintain buildings and mechanical systems throughout Campus and tunnel system, as well as perform other duties as directed by the plant supervisor and assistant plant supervisor. Assistance in carrying out other duties of Physical Plant may be occasionally required.
Physical Condition
Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over fifty pounds. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders and reach approximately 30", to stoop, twist and work in awkward positions. Must be able to work from heights at least as high as highest equipment in Plant and roofs.
Should have experience as a fireman in high pressure installations and in plant maintenance work. Electronic, electrical, computer, or chemical analysis experience helpful. Welding, pipefitting, and plumbing experience desirable but not required.
Working knowledge of high pressure steam boiler operation, and the functions and mechanics of such stationary plant equipment as turbines, compressors, pumps, and motors. Must speak, understand, read, and write English effectively. Skill in the use of hand tools. Ability to operate, repair, and maintain plant equipment, and to detect defects or malfunctions in equipment while in operation.
Graduation from a standard high school, including or supplemented by vocational training or other special training related to the field of work.
Additional Requirements
Requires one to two years experience in power plant or related experience. Strength to use variety of hand tools with moderate to heavy lifting. Basic math and shop experience and physical ability to work from ladders. Previous experience in boilers, HAVC and experience with a PC system highly desirable. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *Requires employment physical exam. *A valid Texas driver's license is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive (Low) and requires a criminal background check.
