2018-19 FAFSA Verification Standards

  • The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) is available NOW by the U.S. Department of Education which allows the student/parent to transfer their 2016 income tax return information onto the 2018-19 FAFSA application. Students are STRONGLY encouraged to utilize the IRS DRT!
  • You will provide 2016 income information on your 2018-19 FAFSA which means you will be able to import your tax income information electronically from the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT). Since most families already have their 2016 income taxes completed and filed, you will not  submit applications with income ‘estimates’ OR have to wait until next year’s tax return has been filed.

  • You may be selected for verification and, if selected, students/parents MUST submit an IRS Tax RETURN TRANSCRIPT (see below for details) to the MSU Financial Aid Office -- copies of signed tax returns will no longer be accepted (unless a foreign tax return has been filed or identity theft has occurred).
  • For taxpayers who filed an AMENDED IRS Income Tax Return, please provide both of the following:
  • An IRS Tax Return Transcript (which does not have to be signed), AND
  • A signed copy of the IRS Form 1040X that was filed with the IRS OR a “Record Of Account Transcript” (which is available at irs.gov).
  • Independent Students and Parents of Dependent students who are nontax filers OR tax filers who received an extension who still have not filed their 2016 income tax return must provide confirmation of non-filing DATED ON/AFTER OCTOBER 1, 2017.  Student and parent confirmation of non-filing can be obtained from the IRS (irs.gov) using Form 4506-T (check Box 7) AND enter the date of 12/31/2016 (Box 9).  If appropriate, a similar confirmation from another taxing authority (e.g., a U.S. territory or a foreign government) is also acceptable.

  • If a student/parent reports income-earned-from-work but did NOT file a tax return, student/parent must submit W2’s to the MSU Financial Aid Office to document the income earned from work.
