Vinson Award

The Vinson Award is given annually to a current student in mass communication for journalistic writing/reporting. This year the award will be between $500 and $1,000. The winner will be notified in late March and will be expected to attend MSU’s annual awards dinner in April as well as the mass communication department’s annual awards dinner on May 13, 2016.

  1. Any news story, feature, sports, editorial or personal column is eligible. Print, broadcast and digital work are all eligible.
  2. You may submit up to three entries (each will be considered separately); however, you may submit no more than one entry from each of the categories listed above (i.e., only one news story, only one editorial, etc.).
  3. All printed entries must be typed/typeset and free of editing marks and/or words written by hand.
  4. All entries must be submitted as PDFs. All print/web entries must be the material that was published in print or on the web. All broadcast entries must be the full script, including complete sound bites. Broadcast entries may include up to five still shots to give the judges an idea of the video that went with the entry.
  5. All evidence of the writer’s identity must be removed. Bylines and tag-outs must be completely obliterated. The only evidence of your identity should be an e-mail listing your name, address and telephone number, as well as the title of the piece and where it was published.
  6. Entries should be attached as PDFs to an e-mail. Each entry will receive a number and will be forwarded to the judges as submitted, without the identifying information.
  7. Each applicant must be an undergraduate at MSU who is enrolled for at least 12 credit hours this semester.
  8. Applicants must be in good academic standing with the university.
  9. Failure to follow these rules will result in disqualification.
