Mission Statement

The Master of Education degree with a major in Language and Literacy Studies prepares the classroom teacher in all aspects of reading instruction. The program will enable the student to explore current theory, research, and best practices in reading instruction and assessment. Upon completion of the degree, the student will be eligible to apply for professional certification as a Reading Specialist and will be prepared for a variety of careers in the field of reading.

General Admission Requirements

1.  Completed bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

2.  At least 3.0 GPA or higher on the undergraduate degree

3.  Two professional recommendations from individuals who can address your intellectual competences and potential for success (i.e. professors, employers, etc.).  Please request for these recommendations to be written on institutional or business letterhead.

Requirements for International Students

 Applicants whose native language is not English must take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS test: Scores should be above 60 on the Ibt (internet-based) TOEFL. For students who choose to take the IELTS in lieu of TOEFL, the minimum score is 6.

Specific Options

Option 1: Reading Specialist applicants must have a masters degree, two years of classroom teaching experience in a public or accredited private school, all required coursework and 160 hours reading practicum, as well as a passing grade on the state certification exam.

Option 2: Master Reading Teacher applicants must meet all requirements above, plus three years of classroom teaching experience, and complete EDUC 4723/5623: Mentoring OR READ 6913: Independent Graduate Study in Mentoring.

Option 3: Bilingual Education Supplemental Certificate applicants must choose bilingual education courses for your focus area.
