Learning Communities

We are excited to introduce the MSU Learning Communities Initiative which is designed to enhance the first year experience for new MSU students.

Learning Communities are offered every fall semester and provide students and faculty opportunities to pursue learning in more intentionally connected ways.

Through linked courses, professors can collaborate with integrated assignments that can engage students' interest with deeper exploration of issues and help students develop and connect skills and knowledge in a more meaningful way.

Fall 2018 Learning Community Courses

While every Learning Community will be unique based on different instructors and content, they will all work to achieve:

  • Enhanced learning
  • Critical Thinking
  • Sense of Community

What Is a 21st Century Liberal Education?

Liberal Education is an approach to learning that empowers individuals and prepares them to deal with complexity, diversity, and change. It provides students with broad knowledge of the wider world (e.g. science, culture, and society) as well as in-depth study in a specific area of interest. A liberal education helps students develop a sense of social responsibility, as well as strong and transferable intellectual and practical skills such as communication, analytical and problem-solving skills, and a demonstrated ability to apply knowledge and skills in real-world settings.
