Education Amendments Act of 1972 – Title IX
What is Title IX?
Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination and sexual harassment in education. This includes discrimination in any education program or activity – public or private – receiving federal funding. It is used to promote equity in education by making sure that girls/women receive equal resources and treatment in the classroom and in the establishment of women’s athletic programs. What does Title IX say?
No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
Who does Title IX protect?
Title IX protects students, faculty, and staff in federally funded education programs. The law applies to every aspect of the program, including admissions, recruitment, academics, employment, athletics, and student services. Title IX also prohibits sexual harassment, which is defined as unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature.
How are violations reported?
Any member of the University community may report conduct that constitutes sexual harassment or sex discrimination covered by Title IX to the Title IX Coordinator. The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) was given the responsibility for enforcing Title IX. The University will take whatever action is necessary to prevent sex discrimination and sexual harassment and to correct it if it should occur.
