Title: Director, Student Development and Orientation
Description: Directs and manages all daily operations of the Student Development and Orientation Office. Plans, implements, and supervises various multicultural, social, and educational programs to improve and expand campus life. Cooperates in the support of campus events sponsored by other student services departments. Responsible for development and coordination of new student orientation programs. Serves as University liaison for all student organizations. Develops new and evaluates existing publicity that pertains to the Office of Student Development and Orientation and the University Programming Board. Advise and supervise the MSU cheerleaders and cheer coach. Coordinates Student Success Series and Education Programming, oversees Student Organizations (registration, mandatory meetings, advisor training, resources, development workshops, policies), manages the Student Organization Fund (SOF), assists the Dean of Students with leadership development and programming, and supervises and provide administrative support for areas of Greek Life, Multiculturalism, and Volunteerism. Serves on University committees as assigned. Reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students.
Examples: Develops and administers Annual Family Day Activities. Responsible for implementation of Homecoming activities in conjunction with the Alumni Association. Works with the Department of Athletics to develop, maintain, and supervise activities that maximize student support for the University's athletic teams. Serves as account manager for student activities and organizations under advisement. Engages in ongoing and continuous networking with colleagues on a state and regional level. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical Condition:
Experience: Three to five years experience managing a student activities program, preferably at a four-year college or university. Some previous marketing and promotions experience preferred as well as experience in budgeting and administration.
Knowledge: Should be knowledgeable in the use of personal computers and common office software programs, such as Word, Excel and Outlook; have a good understanding of generally accepted budgeting and accounting practices; know how to organize and manage meetings and other events; and be familiar with a variety of methods for promoting and marketing student activities, both on and off campus. Knowledge of MSU policies and procedures that pertain to Student Activities and organizations.
Education: Master's degree required in college student personnel, counseling or related area.
Additional Requirements: Must be an outgoing and creative individual with strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to deal with many different and stressful situations at one time. Must be well organized and able to communicate with staff and students. Must be able to make group presentations and be able to work long and flexible hours. *Regular reliable attendance is required. * This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
