Title: Assistant Controller
Description: Performs advanced, managerial accounting work. Work involves assisting and reporting to the university Controller in preparation of the Annual Financial Report, investment reporting, fixed asset reporting, and other analytical reports as necessary. The Assistant Controller is responsible for all fixed asset records and the supervision of personnel in the performance of campus wide inventories of those fixed assets and is designated as the university's property manager. Maintains the university's record retention schedule and advises departments on the most current state retention requirements. The Assistant Controller performs the duties of the Controller in the Controller's absence.
Examples: Prepares adjusting journal entries as needed to record, correct, and close fixed asset accounts. Prepares all fixed asset and related bond schedules for the Annual Financial Report and other special financial reports and statements as required. Responsibilities include review and approval of accounts payable documents prior to payment. Will maintain records of HEAF (Higher Education Assistance Funds) approvals, expenditures, encumbrances, and fund balances. Also responsible for recording monthly investment activity and reviewing the propriety of all investment transactions.
Physical Condition:
Experience: Minimum of five years of progressive experience in governmental or private accounting.
Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of acceptable accounting procedures, practices, and principles governing maintenance of accounting records and reporting. Working knowledge of office machines, computer mainframe and PC environment.
Education: Graduation from an accredited senior college with a degree in accounting. Master's degree and/ or CPA Certificate preferred.
Additional Requirements: Ability to research pertinent data in a variety of accounting areas. Proficiency in the recording, examination, and reporting of financial data. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with university departments. *Regular reliable attendance is required. * This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
