Title: Academic Counselor Coordinator
Description: The Academic Counselor Coordinator is responsible to the Director of the Academic Success Center for helping students, primarily freshman, plan their academic study and maximize their academic potential. Counsels undergraduate students in the UniversityĎs core curriculum and relevant degree program requirements. Coordinates the development and implementation of first-year student informational programs and materials, provides leadership to the ASC Counselors and prepares program reports. Reports to the Director of the Academic Success Center.
Examples: Works primarily with first year students to advise and develop their academic study plan. Participates in the development of programs and informational materials that address the learning needs of students and promote studentsí academic success. Maintains complete and accurate confidential student records. Coordinates advising scheduling and supervision of ASC Counselors and student worker. Participates in the collection of information related to freshman retention and program effectiveness. Conducts periodic workshops, surveys and program effectiveness assessment. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical Condition:
Experience: Minimum of three years previous experience in academic counseling and/or teaching preferred. Should also be experienced in the use of computer software programs such as Microsoft office.
Knowledge: Must have excellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task. Must demonstrate understanding of college readiness and college- age adult learners. Have knowledge of or be able to quickly learn the Universityís core curriculum and additional various requirements of academic programs, and the MSU Student Data System.
Education: Bachelorís and Masterís degrees required. Licensure LPC, PA, or MSW is preferred.
Additional Requirements: Must have a demonstrated interest in working with and assisting students and be able to work effectively with a heavy volume of student traffic. Must be able to keep complete, accurate, and confidential records. Must have the ability to learn, interpret and apply detailed academic requirements to the needs of individual students. Participate in training workshops and other professional activities. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
