The Academic Advisor explains degree plans and advises qualified students on the appropriate courses and the requirements for planning academic studies and maximizing academic potential.
Works primarily with students to provide information regarding college programs, educational options, and requirements. Maintains complete and accurate confidential student records, compiles data on matriculation and retention, and participates in student recruitment programs. Evaluates academic transcripts and determines studentís eligibility and satisfactory progress towards degree. Performs other duties as assigned.
Previous experience in counseling and/or teaching preferred. Experience assisting distance and nontraditional students is helpful. Must be experienced in the use of computer software applications (Microsoft Office preferred.) Experience with MSU student software system is helpful.
Must have knowledge of or be able to quickly learn the curricula and requirements of the Collegeís various programs and the universityís core curriculum. Must have excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Must have a demonstrated interest in working with and assisting students. Must be able to handle a heavy volume of student traffic. Must be able to work on multiple projects concurrently. Must be able to maintain confidentiality. Must be able to make group presentations and participate in other professional activities. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
