Title: Museum Curator, Collections and Exhibitions
Description: The Museum Curator is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the exhibition program and the permanent collections of the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at Midwestern State University. Primary responsibilities include planning, managing, implementing, supervising, and evaluating all exhibition initiatives, including temporary exhibitions and permanent collections. Administers the exhibitions of the Museum within the framework of approved policies, plans, and budget. Develops goals, plans, calendars, reports, recommendations, and budgets related to exhibitions and collections. Reports to the Museum Director.
Examples: Researches, plans, curates and produces exhibitions. Manages the acquisition, documentation, maintenance, care, and records of the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Oversees and implements the Collection Management Plan and the Collection Development Plan. Constructs, oversees and updates strategic Exhibition Plan. Manages and supervises the care and use of the collections by ensuring proper storage, handling, conservation, and exhibition techniques. Manages and supervises the collections and loan records including inventories, condition reports, and cataloguing. Supervises the accessioning, identification, classification and cataloguing of objects in the Museum’s collections. De-accessions objects in the Museum’s collections according to Collection Management Plan. Assists staff and visitors in securing collection, donor, and source information and documentation. Monitors storage areas for collection security and environment. Reviews and advises on collection insurance values and requirements. Provides access to the collections by responding to requests from the public, staff, and other museum and institutions for information and preparing and processing objects of art for loan. Prepares budgets, reports, and billing records for the Exhibitions and Collections area. Produces condition reports for in-coming and out-going loans. Develops timelines and individual responsibilities for installation and de-installation of each exhibition. Manages records of loans for the Museum and creates documents required by other institutions. Originates and coordinates shipping for in-coming and outgoing loans. Assists with transporting, crating, shipping, and handling of art works for in-coming and out-going loans. Coordinates exhibition installation and de-installation. Writes or supervises the writing of brochures, label copy, and didactics to accompany exhibitions. Maintains artist, donor, accession and exhibition files; updates collection database files. Assesses the conservation needs of art works in the permanent collection and recommends conservation care of artworks. Works with Public Programs Manager to establish overall continuity of purpose, programs, and exhibitions. Provides images and exhibit information for publicity and marketing of exhibitions. Participates in Strategic Planning. Develops grants for museum programs. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical Condition: Ability to handle and lift large heavy artwork, pedestals, and tools, and work on a ladder.
Experience: A minimum of four years relevant experience in a museum setting or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of museum administration and site management; collection management, exhibition development and current museum practices. Knowledge of the identification, preservation, conservation, and cataloguing of artifacts and collections. Skill in designing and mounting exhibits. Knowledge of budget management and fundraising practices and techniques. Ability to effectively supervise staff. Knowledge of research methods and techniques. Proficient in the use of personal computers and related software applications for word processing, spreadsheet and database.
Education: Bachelor of Art or Art History or related field, required, Master’s preferred.
Additional Requirements: Excellent organizational, multi-tasking and time management skills. Public relations, interpersonal and oral and written communication skills including the ability to write grant proposals; the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships and to give presentations and media interviews. Skill in problem solving and making sound decisions. Must be available to work a non-traditional schedule including evenings and weekends and travel occasionally. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
