Title: Assistant Director, Athletics for Marketing, Promotions & Public Relations
Description: Responsible to Director of Athletics for developing and implementing a comprehensive marketing program for the MSU Athletics program. Plans, executes, and acquires funding for year-round, seasonal, and game day promotions and other special projects. Develops healthy relationships with the media, sponsors, Mustangs Athletic Club members, fans, and the university community. Keeps students involved and informed about up-coming events and special attractions. Responsible for handling electronic and print media activities, press releases, and advertising; writing articles for publication; and developing and producing departmental information using web technology. Writes and designs pages for Athletics website to maintain current, interesting and interactive web content to departmental and University design standards. Develops new programs that strengthen the relationship between MSU and the community. Responsible for directing the broadcasting activities and initiatives of the Athletic Department. Performs other duties as required by the Director of Athletics.
Examples: Writes all newspaper ads and radio and television spots related to Athletics promotions and fundraising. Writes seasonal stories on all sports, key alumni, and upcoming events for print, electronic media, website, the Sunwatcher, and other publications. Develops a theme for each sport’s season and a promotional strategy with the cooperation of the media. Secures game day promotions and giveaways for all sports. Responsible for weekly luncheons during the fall and winter for the media, sponsors and fans. Works directly with departmental fundraising events like the Mustangs Athletic Club membership drive and other departmental fundraising events and enhances the growth of the Kids Zone. Assists in running departmental promotional golf tournaments. As Director of Broadcasting, will Serve as the “Voice of Mustangs Athletics” on many MSU scheduled events and will book talent for all other games, handles the technical requirements involved in setting up web cast and video streaming for our sports programs.
Physical Condition: Must have the ability to climb stairs in order to gain access to bleachers, press boxes, etc.
Experience: Approximately three years experience in public relations/media services in an athletic related field. Additional experience in sales, advertising, marketing, promotions and/or athletic administration desired.
Knowledge: Should have a good knowledge of marketing, promotions, ticket sales, advertising, and television production techniques. Comprehensive experience producing publications using desktop publishing, including use of both layout/design and illustration software and Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML). An extensive knowledge of the community, its demographics and business environment preferred.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Sports Marketing or closely related field is required. Master’s degree in any of these areas is highly desirable.
Additional Requirements: Must have effective written and oral communications skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Must be able to work independently and to plan and execute multiple projects with minimum supervision. Must be a positive representative of MSU Athletics. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
