Title: Carpenter I
Description: Skilled carpentry work involving the performance of primarily rough carpentry assignments, and the use of power and hand tools in the construction, maintenance, and repair of structures, fixtures, and articles of wood. Works under the supervision of the Carpenter Foreman or lead carpenter. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may require heavy lifting, stooping, working on roofs, ladders, and scaffolds. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Examples: Performs rough and general carpentry work in the construction and maintenance of buildings, floors, walks, roofs, stairways, doors, windows, and other structures by installing or removing walls, partitions, and similar construction. Performs related duties as assigned. Maintains record of material labor expended on each job.
Physical Condition: Moderate physical activity with occasional lifting of objects weighing over fifty pounds.
Experience: Two years of general construction and carpenter experience in the construction, repair, and maintenance of buildings.
Knowledge: General knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, equipment, and materials of the trade. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to work from sketches and blueprints, and to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Skill in the use of tools, materials, and equipment used in the carpentry trade. Physical ability to perform moderately heavy physical work and to remain outdoors in all types of weather.
Education: Graduation from high school or vocational school.
Additional Requirements: Must be able to operate wood working shop tools, working with hand tools, air tools, power tools, jigs and template. Know the difference in various types of lumber and how to provide desired finishes. Be able to build/repair cabinets, shelves, hang doors, etc. *Regular reliable attendance is required. *Requires employment physical exam. *A valid Texas driver's license is required. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
