Human Resources Assistant I
Performs responsible entry-level clerical and technical human resources work under the supervision of the Director of Human Resources with minimal latitude for independent judgment. Supports the Human Resources Department function as an HR generalist. Performs related duties as assigned.
Responsible for auditing time sheets and data entry of reductions to employees’ accrued leave balances. Maintains files and assists in determining employee eligibility for the Family Medical Leave (FMLA) and the Sick Leave Pool as well as other types of approved leaves. Works with the department supervisors to ensure that time worked and leaves taken are reported correctly. Assists the HR department staff in reviewing and auditing reports, personnel actions, and employment documents and entering employee data in HR system. May assist in the collection of data for statistical reports; maintaining employee personnel files; compiling employee orientation packets and training materials; greeting visitors and answering telephones. Serves as backfill for other HR department positions as needed.
Ability to sit for long periods of time; stand, and bend while filing.
One to two years of clerical/secretarial experience required preferably with emphasis on the human resources function. Requires experience in filing, preparation of reports and correspondence. Should be experienced in the use of computers and computer software programs such as Word, Outlook, Excel, and Access. Experience in working with numbers.
Requires excellent computer skills. Proficiency in the use of a ten-key calculator. Some knowledge of and understanding of applicable Federal, State, and institutional rules, regulations, laws, and policies as they apply to the human resources function. General knowledge of automated human resource systems and acceptable office procedures. Knowledge of the campus organization, functions, procedures, and personnel is preferred.
High school graduation required; some college preferred.
Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the university. Courtesy and professionalism a must. Ability to use good judgment. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Extreme accuracy in all phases of work.
