Dean's Message

Greetings to you, the current and prospective students of the Midwestern State University Graduate School! As you explore and engage in graduate education, I hope you have a sense of empowerment, engagement, and opportunity. Graduate study, building upon the foundation you have already established with your baccalaureate degree, develops new knowledge, skills, and strengths that will move you toward your goals.

At Midwestern State University, it is our mission to prepare students through “research and creative activities alongside faculty …. To contribute constructively to society through their work and through their private lives” (MSU Mission Statement).

Graduate students and faculty scholars at Midwestern State University form a strong learning community. We invite you to join us and, once a member of our community, to engage from the first day through graduation to co-create an outstanding graduate school experience. I hope you will join our graduate student association, present your work at one of our venues on campus or at a conference, and stay connected throughout your course of study and beyond!

Your future is bright and, together, we will make a difference around the corner and around the globe. Having recently moved from Philadelphia, I bring you a quote from Benjamin Franklin, a noted author, scientist, inventor, statesman, Founding Father, and all around renaissance figure. I believe you may find it pertinent as you engage in your own journey,  An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”. Education does involve an investment of time, energy, and resources, but it does pay a fine rate of return in self-efficacy, personal satisfaction, and increased earning power! From a global perspective, a favorite quote from Kofi Annan, the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001, “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress in every society, in every family”.

I look forward to hearing from you and meeting you around campus as you engage in your own quest for knowledge!

Dr. Deborah R. Garrison
