Colorguard & Winterguard at MSU

Welcome to the home of the MSU Guard. The colorguard at MSU is an important part of the marching band and performs at all band performances and halftime shows. The colorguard is open to anyone with guard experience and incorporates flags, rifles, sabres, and dance.

The MSU Winterguard is one of the few winterguard programs in Texas belonging to a university band program and sponsored by the band and music department, as well as representing the university. It is a bit different from an independent guard, but competes in the Independent A category in the North Texas Colorguard Association and Winterguard International competitions.

MSU has been actively competing since 1991, and has been a member of the Texas Colorguard Circuit, the Mid America Performing Arts Association, and now the North Texas Colorguard Association. The winterguard was a semi-finalist in the WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio in 2005-07, and has returned to Dayton several times since then.

This year’s colorguard includes Cynthia Ramirez, Samantha Locke, Megan Vaughn, Meagan Laye, Autumn Walker, Misty Skelton, and Becky McQuillan.

The colorguard and winterguard are under the direction of Jammal Reyes, who is originally from Wichita Falls, and has been teaching in the upper Midwest for several years before returning to Texas this year.

He is assisted by Elizabeth Ivey, Nicole Kutzer, and Angel Weathered.

The winterguard will have auditions for the 2014 season in the middle part of October, and the competitive season begins in January.   For more information about either of the groups, contact Alan Black at (940) 397-4186 or alan.black@mwsu.edu .
