CHORAL & VOCAL STUDIES
Part of a strong and active Department of Music within the Lamar D. Fain College of Fine Arts, the vocal program at Midwestern State University offers instruction leading to two degrees:
Bachelor of Music: Vocal Performance
Bachelor of Music with Teacher Certification
Students in both programs study with senior voice faculty. Emphasis in the vocal performance major is placed on performance techniques, diction, foreign languages, and pedagogy. The teacher certification major focuses on educational methods and psychology for classroom teaching, balanced with quality performance skills.
A remarkable aspect of study in voice at Midwestern State University is the multitude of performance opportunities available to students, such as staged operatic productions presented by MSU Opera Workshop, musicals presented by the MSU Departments of Theatre and Music combined, various concerts given by University choral ensembles, and numerous occasions for solo performance.
The choral program at Midwestern State University provides outstanding student performing groups for students of all skill levels. The music department offers three choral ensembles and they are under the direction of Dr. James Schuppener, Director of Choral Activities.
The University Singers is a select choral ensemble open to all students of the University who qualify by audition. At least four hours of rehearsal are required each week and members must participate in all public performances. Choral music from all historical periods in various genres is explored and performed. The repertoire includes world music from a variety of cultures. University Singers Facebook
Oratorio Chorus is a choral organization open to all interested students and townspeople specializing in the performance of major works with orchestral accompaniment. Historical periods ranging from Renaissance to the 21st Century are varied each semester, as well as the birth origin of the individual composers, so as to provide a fresh multicultural musical experience with each major work.
Midwestern Singers is a chamber ensemble selected by audition from members of the University Singers. The Midwestern Singers perform a wide variety of music from different countries, ranging from madrigals and motets to vocal jazz arrangements from America and abroad.
The voice studios offer every student many opportunities to learn, perform, and participate. The voice studios of full-time professors Dr. Schuppener and Dr. Maxwell, as well as several part-time voice instructors, bring great depth of experience to the teaching of voice.
