An annual highlight is participation in the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association conference and competition. Held at a different location each year, the event includes workshops with working professionals, critiques of students’ résumés and portfolios, seminars on topics such as open records and technology, and the opportunity to meet students in mass communication programs throughout the state.  The event also includes two sets of competitions, the first of which honors previously published and broadcast work during the school year, the second of which includes on-site competitions in writing, design, broadcasting and photography.

Recent awards include sweepstakes in both television and newspaper and best television newscast, as well as dozens of individual awards. Students have also won awards recently from organizations such as the Southwest Journalism Congress, the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Media Association, and College Broadcasters, Inc.
